Tesla unveiled its redesigned second-generation Roadster on October 15, showcasing an electric sports car that can briefly lift off the ground and turn in the air. Despite the dramatic demonstration, CEO Elon Musk said Tesla is targeting 2028 for consumer production.
The presentation took place at SpaceX’s testing facility in McGregor, Texas. Developed through a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, the prototype used cold-gas thrusters and a suction system to perform maneuvers that included driving upside down on a ramp and jumping over other vehicles.
During acceleration runs, Tesla claimed the prototype reached 60 mph in about 0.8 seconds, a figure that was not independently verified. The company also announced a top speed exceeding 230 mph.
The reveal follows years of delays. Tesla first presented its next-generation Roadster concept in 2017, with deliveries originally planned for 2020. The company has yet to announce a final purchase price for the redesigned vehicle.
Questions also remain about public-road approval and when customers will receive their cars. Although Tesla is accepting reservations, its terms do not guarantee delivery. For prospective buyers, the unveiling marks another milestone, but a substantial wait remains.
