Sleep is more than rest. It plays an important role in keeping your brain, heart, immune system, and overall health functioning properly.
When you consistently get too little sleep, your body starts to show the effects. You may experience difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, irritability, low energy, and mood changes.
Over time, chronic sleep deprivation can also increase the risk of serious health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and depression.
Sleep also gives your body time to repair tissues, regulate hormones, and strengthen your immune defenses. Without enough rest, even simple daily activities can become more difficult.
According to the CDC, most adults ages 18 to 60 need at least seven hours of sleep each night.
The bottom line: Getting enough sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s an essential part of taking care of your health. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your body is give it the rest it deserves.
