After years of helping choose who takes the Super Bowl halftime stage, Jay-Z has reportedly selected himself to headline the 2027 show, according to an October 20 report from Puck’s Dave Brooks, citing multiple sources. The outlet also reported that Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber were considered for the performance.
Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. If confirmed, the appearance would mark Jay-Z’s first Super Bowl performance, bringing him onto a stage he has helped shape from behind the scenes.
The reported selection would place Jay-Z in the unusual position of helping oversee a show with himself as its star. Roc Nation began its partnership with the NFL in 2019, taking a central role in the halftime show’s production and artist selection. The agreement was renewed in 2024, extending the company’s influence over one of entertainment’s most prominent stages.
The NFL, however, has not announced its headliner. Commissioner Roger Goodell declined to confirm the report during an October 21 news conference following the league’s owners’ meetings in New York.
“We haven’t announced anything. Until we do, we won’t make any comment on that,” Goodell said, according to AllHipHop, citing Front Office Sports. His response didn’t rule out Jay-Z, but it left the reported booking unconfirmed.
The timing would give the Brooklyn-born rapper another major milestone during a year celebrating two defining albums. His 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt, turned 30 in 2026, while The Blueprint, released in 2001, marked its 25th anniversary. Puck pointed to those anniversaries and his current concert activity as part of the backdrop to the reported selection.
Jay-Z has previously entertained the possibility of performing at the Super Bowl halftime show. At the January 2024 premiere of The Book of Clarence, he told Entertainment Tonight that choosing himself too early would have been selfish, but left the door open to a future appearance.
A confirmed booking would also add another Super Bowl chapter to his family’s performance history. Beyoncé headlined the halftime show in 2013 before returning as a guest alongside Bruno Mars during Coldplay’s 2016 set. Jay-Z has yet to make his own appearance as a performer.
Attention now turns to his October 23 and 24 concerts at SoFi Stadium. Puck reported that Jay-Z could announce the halftime appearance during those shows, potentially setting up his return to the same venue in February on the NFL’s biggest night.
